ESS Conference

On March 1st 2024 I traveled to Washington D.C with several other SEEK students, and TA’s to attend and present in the ESS conference. This was my first ever professional conference that I presented in. 

My research was focused primarily on artificial intelligence and its implementation on the translation and interpretation services and academic areas. I was able to speak upon my research on how AI is affecting the young generation – less work ethic, less brain stimulation, and less human interaction- and most likely work performances in school settings would decrease within time- if AI is not restricted in the school setting. AI has not only been affecting the school areas but has been a major change factor in the translation and interpretation services. In particular, the translation field has been impacted by the AI usage by companies and the higher demand of editing than translating. This means that translators are getting hired to edit and proofread instead of translating documents, websites, etc. that the client/company needs. This change in the client perspective has proven to be hurtful to translators as AI is taking over. 

As a future novice translator myself I have seen this drastic change of usage of AI in the translation field. One way I have seen this drastic change is back in October, a group of peers and I were assigned to translate a medical booklet in English for a Spanish-speaking audience, located in New York. To test whether AI was useful for my translation portion I decided to translate manually first then to ask ChatGPT to translate to see what differences it would show. 

ChatGPT and the manual translation were used to focus and test on three main points: text registry, daily word usage, and grammar. The following words would show a difference of text registry when used in the translation.

ChatGPT Model:

•Manejadora

•IRM

•Someterse al proceso

•Confort y camaderia

Manual Translation:

•Entrenadora

•Radiografias con anestesia

•Vive el proceso

•Tranquilidad y confianza

Results:

The translation ChatGPT offered was accurate, in the translation of words used as units for the whole text, but it didn’t make the sentences flow appropriately or make sense. It is crucial to know when to make the registry changes as this can impact the message the reader receives.

The manual translation we offered had a more structured flow, in making the word changes necessary for the audience to understand. Also, the text registry was changed in order to bring more comfort to the parents and children reading the booklet.
