Cuny has been around for decades and will continue too. One of the most significant hurdles for many students is the cost of tuition. For low-income families, the idea of higher education can feel daunting, leading to higher dropout rates and limited access to opportunities. Tuition-free programs can alleviate this burden, allowing students to focus on their studies rather than financial concerns. By removing tuition fees or lowering expenses, CUNY can empower students to pursue their academic goals without the stress of mounting debt. I’ve witnessed how much students go through from having to work 2 jobs to even working 3 all while being a full parent or student. With financial stress alleviated, students are more likely to explore a variety of academic paths. Tuition-free programs can encourage students to pursue their passions—whether a major in the arts, sciences, or vocational training—without the fear of wasting money on a degree they might not use. This flexibility allows students to discover their strengths and interests, leading to a more fulfilling educational journey.

Hey Ismael,
Great post. CUNY actually used to be 100% free for New Yorkers – from its founding until the city went bankrupt in the 70’s. It’s a tragedy that it isn’t still free – but we recently introduced the Excelsior Scholarship for low-income students (https://www.cuny.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/excelsior-scholarship-faqs/) which makes tuition free. It’s not perfect, but it’s a start!
