Currently at Hunter College, my major is political science and government while my current minor is legal studies. I want to pursue a career in law and become a lawyer down the line. Political science and legal studies coincide as laws are what make up our government and our societal norms defining the ways how people live. Growing up in a community made up of predominantly working-class people and immigrants, navigating the legal system is often challenging. I often wondered if I could one day help make a difference in the lives of people from underserved communities. Everyone has a right to legal services no matter their circumstance and have their voices heard. Since high school, I knew that I loved civil rights law and that I yearned to help people with it. I’ve always understood that law holds the key to battling apathy and injustice but so does compassion and empathy. With more compassion and empathy from lawyers, clients of color would have more pleasant experiences during their counseling cases and more positive outcomes with their overall long-term livelihood. Having a strong understanding of the difficult experiences that many marginalized individuals face is crucial to improving the legal system in America.
2 years from now, I see myself moving on from Hunter to law school Hopefully, Harvard or Yale, the big leagues. It takes a village to not only make it into law school but to make it through law school. I am currently seeking to expand my support system both academically and professionally so that I can be best prepared and I know deep down in my heart that I have everything it takes to be a great lawyer. I’m working my way up to climb the ladder, and I won’t let anything stop me from reaching my goals.
